Event Details

This session will be a test run of the "Storage and Virtualization for the DBA" pre-con which I'll be giving at the SQL PASS Summit in Seattle this November.

One of the biggest issues in database performance is around storage.  It’s also one of the hardest places to troubleshoot performance issues because storage engineers and database administrators often do not speak the same language.  In this session, we’ll be looking at storage from both the database and storage perspectives.   We’ll be digging into LUNs, HBAs, the fabric, as well as the storage configuration.

As this is a pre-con session we'll be able to really dig into some advanced storage configurations.  This includes RAID groups, multi-pathing software, proper redundant storage network design.  We will also be digging into some advanced storage array backup techniques including taking storage level clones and snapshots.  After going over these advanced techniques we will dig into how these can best be used to backup the SQL Server enviroment to provide maximum redundancy with no recurring tape costs.

This is a free event, and a box lunch will be provided thanks to the generous support of Emulex, Quest Software, Red Gate and Microsoft.

You will need to pay for parking at the building so please keep this in mind.

Stay through the end of the event, fill out an event survey and be entered to win one of our great prizes.

1. "Professional SQL Server 2008 Internals and Troubleshooting" by Christian Bolton, Justin Langford, Brent Ozar, James Rowland-Jones, Jonathan Kehayias, Cindy Gross, Steven Wort

2. One of two copies of Windows 7 Ultimate x86.

3. A brand new XBox 360.

The event starts at 8am and will be getting out about 5pm.

I look forward to seeing you there.
